Large Format Signage: Getting Resolution Right at Scale

The 300 DPI rule comes from print you hold in your hand. Applied to a 6-metre banner it produces a file no RIP will open, and it buys you nothing — nobody presses their eye against a billboard.

Resolution follows viewing distance

  • Under 1 m (exhibition panel, window graphic): 150 DPI at final size.
  • 1–3 m (roll-up, backdrop): 100–120 DPI at final size.
  • 3–10 m (building banner): 50–72 DPI at final size.
  • Over 10 m (billboard): 20–30 DPI at final size is normal.

Build at a scale you can handle

For very large pieces, design at 1:10 with everything vector and set the effective resolution accordingly. Scaling up at output keeps text razor sharp and keeps the working file manageable.

Material decides the ink

Outdoor vinyl needs UV or latex ink to survive Dhaka sun and monsoon. Mesh lets wind through and belongs on any large façade banner. Backlit media needs denser artwork because transmitted light washes out mid-tones — we compensate at the file stage, but you should expect the on-screen preview to look slightly heavy.

Do not forget the finishing

Eyelets every 50 cm, hemmed edges on anything above two metres, and pole pockets where the piece hangs from a frame. Tell us how it will be mounted and we will set the finishing before we print, not after.
